2016 Hawk's Roost Pinot Noir (available May 2018)
Chuck Jones, selling us fruit for several years for other labels, has exquisitely tended this ranch in the middle of the Russian River Valley. But with our 2016 vintage is a first for Alquimista Cellars. This vineyard has reliably produced a “larger than life” Pinot, and we used it for blending to give any Pinot its weight and strength. While the results have always been exciting, we have finally decided to bottle this vineyard’s wine separately, under its own designation, sending a hugely deserving shout-out to Chuck and his property.

Tasting Notes

Bacon fat, meaty, smoky, pepper and savory spice, accented by camphor and flinty wet stone with Santa Rosa plum evolving on the nose as the wine receives air-time. Dark chocolate, cranberry and fruit compote on the palate with overarching mouthfeel that spreads robust but pliable tannins from start to finish. A departure from your average Cali Pinot, this wine speaks to the Mariafeld clone and the clay-loam site in spades!

Winemaker Notes

Alquimista Cellars is excited to announce that we are using a new closure product. Called “UNiQ”, it comes from our long-time supplier Ganau, is made from finely ground natural cork that has been put through a high-intensity steam cleaning process at 180°. process at 180° C. This eliminates any trace of TCA (the chemical compound that causes wine to be “corked”) as well as defending against undesired aromas and off flavors.

VINEYARD: Huichita Clay Loam forms the basic soil structure of this terroir, which is smack-dab in the middle of the Russian River Valley. Row orientation is uncharacteristically East-West, but this allows Chuck to keep the sun-side of the vines always in good cover, with aggressive leaf-plucking on the shade side. The vineyard is entirely planted to the Swiss Clevner Mariafeld clone (UCD-23), which is known for its strength and structure. Delivered!

HARVEST: This was a pretty trouble-free harvest, done in one pick in the middle of September. The skins are thick on this clone, so we never have trouble with Botrytis or any vine disease issues. Chuck likes a clean pick – again, delivered!

FERMENTATION: Primary fermentation went smoothly and finished within a week of barreling down. Secondary fermentation also kicked off relatively easily, meaning we could put this puppy to bed by Yuletide!

BARREL AGING: should end up being 17 months of aging in 15% new French oak, with the balance primarily once-used barrels. Since the fermentation finished in barrel, there is a full compliment of yeast lees remaining in contact with the wine for the duration of barrel aging.

PRODUCTION: 128 cases
