Item Special Note

Minooka Subaru is the oldest Subaru dealership in Pennsylvania and the fourth oldest in the country. Jake Corbett founded the Subaru operation in 1970 at the corner of Sanders Street and Birney Avenue (Route 11) in Scranton. This is the same location where he and partners Tommy Richardson and Bobby Conlon had operated Minooka Motor Sales, a thriving used car business, since 1954.

Jake's enthusiasm for that first Subaru, called the FF1, was contagious and they were selling them as fast as they could get them. It soon became apparent that Minooka Subaru would require a larger location than the two bay garage and small office building that had served Minooka Motors so well. So, in 1973, Minooka Subaru moved just seven blocks south on Route 11 where a small showroom and an expanded service and parts departments could better accommodate their growing customer base. Jake's passion for Subaru's was certainly a factor in the rapid growth of the business, but he got a big assist from the consistent high marks bestowed upon Subaru from organizations such as Consumer Reports and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, accolades that Subaru continues to receive. In the beginning, Subaru was valued for function but short on style. In 1970, all of their cars were front wheel drive with standard transmissions, and the boxy little FF1 was the only model. Today, Subaru's are most known for their standard Symmetrical All Wheel Drive and industry leading safety.

And Subaru has long ago developed cars with style equal to the brand's superior performance. Jake's two partners, Tommy Richardson and Bobby Conlon, retired from the business in the mid-seventies. Around that time, Jim, Susan, and Joe Corbett joined their father as the business adapted to its rapid growth. Jim, Jake's oldest son and President and general manager since Jake's passing in 2001, recently described this family business as multi-generational. By the mid-eighties, two more of Jake's children, Clare and Robert, and a son-in-law and his brother, Tommy and John Shields, joined the other Corbett's in the business. The last two decades have seen two daughters-in-law, Trish and Ellen, and six of Jake's grandchildren, Joe, Pat, Michael, Chris, Jim, and Elizabeth, come on board as well. What's really noteworthy is the length of service among the other employees. Of the 30+ non-family employees, many have been with the business for over 20 years, some more than 30 years. And the Corbett's are not the only extended family in the operation since their staff includes three sets of each first cousins and fathers and sons. However, the entire staff is most proud of the "Subaru families" they continue to service and the many first time Subaru buyers who attracted to the business by the well-earned reputation of Minooka Subaru. Kelley Blue Book calls Subaru the most trusted brand for 2016, and the staff of Minooka Subaru can attest to that by their relationship to legions of customers who have bought Subaru's from them for decades.

In 1990, having long ago grown out of the available space in Minooka, Scranton's southernmost neighborhood, Minooka Subaru relocated to its current location in Moosic, just two miles from the original car lot at the corner of Sanders Street and Birney Avenue. The business is still on Route 11, which runs parallel to I-81, making Minooka Subaru easily accessible to I-81's Exit #180 or Exit #182B.

When Scranton celebrated its 150th year, Minooka marked 62 years in the car business - 46 of those as a top Subaru dealer - and is in the midst of another major expansion of their operation. By fall of 2017, the current facilities will have more than doubled in size, with the service bays alone growing from the current count of 16 to 30.
