Item Description
Peter Ilsted (1861-1933) Playing the Mandolin. Mezzotint in colors, 1911 (O/S 8). 8 5/8 x 8 1/8”. Signed and numbered from the edition of 100 in pencil. The art of the Danish artist, Peter Ilsted, expresses the essence of life in Copenhagen at the turn of the 19th Century: tranquility and orderliness, contentment with home and family. The muted tonalities in this artist’s mezzotints create a luminosity that verges on the supernatural and a silence that verges on mystery. This lovely mezzotint portrays one of the artist’s daughters in their country home in Liselund. There is a strong market in the U.S. and in Europe, both at auction and in art galleries, for Ilsted’s mezzotints and paintings.
