Who remembers sun prints? Well, this year Maiko and Kelsey's classroom created a Cyanotype Portrait Quilt using “portrait” sun prints. Barrie first took portrait photographs of each student and our guides, and then used Photoshop to turn the photos into black and white negatives which she printed on transparency paper. Each child wrote his or her name on the transparency and then laid them in the sun with their own negative on treated fabric to create the cyanotypes, or sun prints. Barrie and her mother then took the cyanotypes and pieced them together with chambray on the front and denim on the back to create this amazing quilt! There are loops on the back so it can be hung on the wall, or used as a blanket. It truly is a labor of love. A huge thank you to Barrie and her mom for their work on this creation!
I especially enjoyed watching Barrie take the photographs because each child is so precious and I loved seeing them smile for their photo.:) We also had a crazy day making the cyanotypes because (of course) we had super strong winds that day. We had some good laughs with the children as we worked to keep all the pieces from blowing away. Lydia, our amazing art specialist and Diego’s mom, came to the rescue with some creative - and successful - solutions!
The children had so much fun with this and it was a joy to watch them in the process. I’m sure each child would love to have this quilt in his or her home to always remember the special classroom we share.:)
