Item Description

The Silent General: Fragment II, Fourth of July, Party Boat, Bayou St John, New Orleans, Louisiana, 2017

Ink jet print mounted on dibond in frame with museum glass
Image size: 30x21 inches

An-My Lê is a Vietnamese American photographer. Her latest work, Silent General, is inspired by Walt Whitman’s Specimen Days & Collect, 1892 and its hybrid mix of journalism, poetry and autobiography. This looser project composed of “fragments” is unfolding throughout the United States. Fragment I from this project was first presented at the Whitney Biennial in 2017. The auctioned photograph Party Boat, is part of Fragment II.

Lê has had solo exhibitions at the Baltimore Art Museum, the Charles Scott Gallery at Emily Carr University, Vancouver, Hasselblad Foundation, Gothenburg, DIA: Beacon, New York, the Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; and P.S.1 MoMA, New York, among many other institutions.  Her work has been included in numerous group exhibitions — including some of the most important exhibitions of recent times — at The Museum of Modern Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; the Tate, London; CCS Hessel Museum of Art; and The Whitney Museum of American Art.

Lê is the recipient of fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation in 2012. She is a professor of Photography at Bard College.
