Item Description

Brainy and Beautiful “Brain Art” by Joey Salvo (Brown school, 8th grade class of 2010).

This artwork is truly one of a kind! There are three pieces, each offered separately.  The first is entiteled "Brain Spiral"

Brain Butterflies: This image depicts three coronal slices of brain tissue stained for the protein RBP4 (red). The blue is a DAPI stain that targeted all cells by binding DNA. The red was created by using a genetic Cre Recombinase system to express the fluorophore tdTomato in cells that also expressed RBP4.

The image is printed by Fracture, Inc. on a 5x7 piece of glass and comes with hardware to mount on a wall or a stand.

Artist Bio: Joey Salvo is a senior in Weinberg College at Northwestern University majoring in Neurobiology and Creative Writing. He is the creator of three blogs on writing and photography and enjoys drawing comics. See https://joeysalvo.wordpress.com/ .

Images: In neurobiology research, different proteins can be tagged with fluorescent labels that glow when hit with a certain wavelength of light. When a beam of light is scanned over a slice of tissue cut from a brain using a razor blade, light emitted from the tissue can be pieced together into an image. These images are invaluable for showing which neuron populations in the brain carry given proteins. The colors can also be manipulated to make art.

Most of these images show Retinol-Binding Protein 4 (RBP4), located in the cerebrum, or the large outer section of the mouse brain. This stain is compared to a second stain that tags all the cells in the sample by targeting DNA. The images were acquired using an epifluorescent microscope, then processed using ImageJ.

Each image is printed by Fracture, Inc. on a 5x7 piece of glass and comes with hardware to mount on a wall or a stand.
