Item Description
This is one of six MOHAN commemorative tea light holders that were made for the auction. Each tea light holder incorporates the same 'Mohan" elephant but is unique in the overall decoration. On the bottom is another elephant as well as Mohan's name and the date of his passing. Each holder comes with 5 tea lights: cucumber melon, trade winds, apple cinnamon, vanilla & unscented.
This is the small size with a diameter of 3.25 inches. It is made of Canadian curly maple and turned on the lathe by John. Then Sylvie custom mixed the teal/emerald green aniline dye to stain them. Each tea light holder incorporates the same 'Mohan" elephant but is unique in the overall decoration. The designs are made using a power rotary tool that carves out mini spheres of varying sizes. Then there are 4 coats of shellac with scuff sanding in between and then final hand sanding with micromesh pads to 12,000 grit. These are truly a labour of love! Please note that the pictures don't accurately capture the surface of the tea light holders which have a beautiful lustre.
So burn a light to honour Mohan and for all the other elephants in India who have been robbed of their freedom and dignity so that they might also have a chance of a better life at WSOS.
John Baker started making pens and other items on the lathe in 2017 to help him recover from a bone marrow transplant. Doing so in support of WSOS provides him with inspiration, motivation on the tough days and, most importantly, a sense of accomplishment, of 'giving back' in some small way. This is the second auction he's contributing to and he hopes to continue for many years.
