Item Description
Three sessions are included. The purpose of this accelerated "curriculum" is to give the participant(s) some basic tools so that they acquire new ways of addressing their stress. Marie-Genevieve Iselin is a clinical psychologist by training but this is NOT psychotherapy. There is no need for self-disclosure, and this is not psychological treatment. MG's main inspiration for this crash course is her training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at the UMass Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, where Jon Kabat-Zinn created this Stress Reduction program. MG was taught by Saki Santorelli, currently the Director of the Center for Mindfulness. In these Stress Reduction sessions, she briefly reviews the stress response and its physiology, but the overwhelming emphasis is then to practice several skills throughout the three sessions to better respond to, and reduce, stress. These skills include developing mindfulness, and learning: different types of breathing exercises, Progressive Muscle Relaxation, Guided Imagery techniques, simple Meditation exercises, and strategies to address/respond to our stress-provoking thoughts. All the skills are practiced in session, and handouts and instructions are given so that you can practice at home. The participant can come to her office (9th street between 5th and 6th Avenue) on Mondays at a mutually convenient time.
