Renata Stein is an independent collage and mixed media artist/sculptor. She served as curator of the Leo Baeck Institute (Center for Jewish History) for over twenty years and now divides her time between pursuing her own art career and as a German translator and appraiser of Judaica and European modernist art.
Artist Statement
My artistic process begins as a dialogue with material. In my wanderings, I collect and salvage discarded detritus of urban life, from rusty cans to withered paper to fallen leaves. Rejoining fragments is an act of tikkun olam that creates new spiritual entities that eclipse existing realities and transform base material into poetic entities that invite reflection and contemplation.
