Item Description
High bidder takes home this original painting of Newbury Street by noted local artist, author and photographer George “Painter George” Jacobs.
Jacobs was a noted artist who summered on Martha's Vineyard (and died tragically en route to his Key West home in a motor vehicle accident on a Pennsylvania highway.)
Jacobs, known for his whimsical watercolors of Cape Cod land and seascapes was the owner of the Local Colors gallery on Water Street in Woods Hole for more than 20 years.
He was also supervisor of the Saturday morning artisan market events held at the old Woods Hole firehouse building.
Bob Schneider, who leased the Woods Hole gallery to Jacobs for the last 20 years, said Jacobs was an extraordinary artist and author of five books including four cook books.
“He was a real Woods Hole character,” said Schneider.
