Research Project: Music Training Biofeedback - Taylor Chomiak, University of Calgary
Being a part of Your Brain On Art was an event I was excited to support because Branch Out funds research that ultimately affects all of us.
I was paired with Taylor Chomiak from the University of Calgary. Taylor’s research looks at linking the brain’s motor system to a pleasurable reward, such as music, to retrain the brain to respond in relation to patients with Autism and Parkinson’s. By using a wearable sensory system they can provide that link with the brain.
With that in mind and combined with Eugene Stickland’s play, The First Dance, I created “Every Moment Needs a Song”. It represents one of those “First Dance Moments” we’ve all been a part of personally or celebrating with friends and family. The human figures I paint express the poses of life, like the anticipation of that first dance. The colours fuse and meld to achieve gesture: transforming abstract images into living moments.
While my work portrays humanity through the use of colour, pattern and line, ultimately I paint to bring joy through happy paintings. This painting is a celebration of the positive and memorable impact music has on our lives.
