Field of Study: Early Development
Research Project: The impact of maternal mental health on baby brain development - Brendan Ostlund, University of Utah
I was inspired by the notion that temperament is based on both nature and nurture. Our dispositions are formed from several biological underpinnings including 1) Genetics, 2) Early Experience and 3) Epigenetics.
Brandon’s research examines the stress levels of expecting mothers and how it influences child development. While stress is often seen as a negative experience, studies are showing that it might, in fact, have an ‘adaptive’ or beneficial effect on the brain development of babies.
In this piece, the plants and flowers represent thoughts. Thoughts are continuously growing, changing, and new thoughts form from experience. An expecting mother’s thoughts are the seeds of her baby’s temperament.
