Research Project: Brain Imaging as a Method for Recovery - Dr. Jeffrey Dunn, University of Calgary

Professor Dunn reviewed the work he and his team have been doing with Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) which is a non-invasive means to assessing oxygen levels in brain injuries, strokes and other neuro-related diseases. This procedure allows data to be collected through a portable cap, wired with infrared transmitters and data receivers, which technology I admire and applaud. It is exciting to see new, non-invasive assessments of an area, which so often experiences injury, and yet…because of the skull, limits ability to obtain images and data for assessment.

Looking at this research as an artist, it reminded me how we repeatedly sketch and admire the external human body, but rarely do we think about the internal structure, which is imperative for life, and which I find equally as beautiful and art-worthy.

My piece for ‘Your Brain on Art’ highlights the fascinating internal structure of the brain as it undergoes the NIRS procedure - showing rays of light entering a (normally) non-(light) penetrable area, the arch-shaped internal infrared light pathways…entering and exiting the brain, the external transmitters/receivers and fiberoptic cables on the cap, and an example of a data graph from which the scientists would obtain their information.
