Research Project: Transcranial Magneticstimulation for Depression – Yamile Jasaui, University of Calgary

Depression is a lonely and cruel place. I have suffered from depression and anxiety for most of my life and understand the importance of seeking treatment. I am one of the lucky ones, treatable with medication. I didn’t realize the possibility of people existing with this condition who are untreatable. I can’t imagine the hopelessness that would exist.  This piece of art was created to reflect the incredible research being done by Neuroscientist, Yamile Jasaui on Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation as a possible solution for the untreatable. These magnetic pulses delivered to the patient have shown to improve, over time, the symptoms of the individual’s depression. Finally being hopeful that there is a solution would be an overwhelming and a huge comfort to those sufferers. I titled the piece, ‘The Remnant’ to illustrate how one may feel as an untreatable person with this condition, like a leftover. Depression is already an isolating state to be in so realizing there may be no help would leave one feeling left behind.

In my piece, I wanted to have the treatment represented by a person closely holding the individual with depression. Being able to experience any relief from depression is extremely comforting and provides a feeling of safety and contentment, not unlike being in the arms of someone you love. These girls look very similar which also represents the trust one must have in oneself to move forward with such treatment. The hand over the eyes illustrates the magnet delivering pulses and also represents healing. Lastly, I am a lover of Crows. To me, this bird represents persistence and resiliency, two traits very common in those fighting any battle with mental illness.
