Field of Study: Parkinson's

Research Project: Parkinson's Disease Using Deep Brain Stimulation - Aaron Chau, University of Calgary

The process of creating this print was a unique experience. I had the privilege of being shown around the research lab and being introduced to the various equipment used. The help and information I received were extraordinarily generous and thorough. Upon exploring the research lab and equipment, I was inspired by a 70’s green computer monitor to create an image that had a flare of science fiction. I wanted to create something that invokes a visual curiosity while also representing the research. This print is an interpretation of a study that investigated the effect of non-invasive, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on cerebellar activity, comparing the efficacy of 50Hz vs 30Hz cTBS.

A green monitor is set as a backdrop with bars that hint to 50Hz vs 30Hz cTBS. A brain floats in the middle, in front or on the screen, as interpreted. Underneath is a TMS coil, directed at the cerebellum, representing the pulse TMS technique used to excite or depress the cerebellum. The motor cortex is illuminated to suggest the relationship between cerebellar activity and the motor cortex excitability.  This print is a single edition composed of nine different colour layers and glazing.
