Research Topic: Ketogenic Diet in Comorbid Autism and Epilepsy - Quentin Pittman, University of Calgary

This research project uses mice that model both autism and epilepsy.  The mice are fed a ketogenic (high fat) diet and the effect on both conditions monitored by EEG and observation.  The diet has been used as a treatment for epilepsy previously, but the effect on autistic behaviours is less well documented.  My discussions with Quentin led me to look at EEG traces in various states. The convulsive spiking is quite striking, especially when compared to the gently undulating one for resting state.

Disruption does not aim to represent the experience of being diagnosed with autism or epilepsy (or both).  Rather, it seeks to express how conditions such as these can change the way life is perceived. The artwork disrupts images of nature by the use of an intrusive spiked EEG pattern that cuts across them.  Parts of the brain are referenced as the flowers mix with astrocytes and trees branch out in a formation similar to neurons in the cortex. The use of the limited monochrome palette serves to exploit the tonal qualities of the ink while reducing the viewer’s sensory experience of normally colourful subject matter.
