Research Project: Ketogenic Diet in Comorbid Autism & Epilepsy - Megan Lewis, University of Calgary
This was is deeply personal project for me. At two and a half years old, my son Fletcher was diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome - a form of severe epilepsy that begins in childhood. It is characterized by multiple types of seizures and intellectual disability. Because the seizures associated with this condition are difficult to control with medication, the intellectual disability tends to worsen with time. I began a treatment journey for my son which lead us to the Ketogenic Diet. Our experience became an example to many turning to the healing properties of diet as it relates to disease mitigation.
For 'Your Brian on Art', I was paired neuroscientist Megan Lewis of the University of Calgary who is studying the Ketogenic Diet in Relation to Epilepsy and Autism. The lead Neurologist for the study was, in fact, my son’s neurologist. There were many interesting and unexpected connections.
The tree branches reaching out and touching each other, in “Reaching Connection”, mirror the synapses of the brain and the network of people helping each other through this common cause.
