Item Description
In discussing this collaborative effort with my grade 6 students, we directed our designs to focus around capturing the spirit of Hoboken Middle School’s community of students and leaders. This work serves as an examination and expression of school spirit and culture. It also reflects the continuous efforts of our teachers and administration.
Artist Statement:
We chose to use silhouettes for the intentional purposes of non-identification. We did not want to focus on someone or anyone, but rather, everyone. These silhouettes represent life and learning in motion as conveyed through energy and movement. The images are dynamic and spirited as well as mindfully meditative.
My students and I chose to create ribbons in the background and incorporate the P.R.I.D.E. of Hoboken Middle School (HMS) into the weaving. HMS is built on the foundation of P.R.I.D.E. and this acronym stands for: Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence. The ribbons represent the continuous flow of commitment that our teachers and leaders have for our students. The ribbons also symbolize the flow of the continuous evolution that is growing and learning. We are separate pieces that are woven together to create one. Yellow was our chosen color of our background to reflect HMS’s school colors and bright atmosphere of the campus. There was a decision to also create this piece to be very colorful and dynamic, which is the summation of our school community. We are proud to present our collaborative efforts as an echo of Hoboken Middle School.
