Item Description

Jean McMann was a Northern California photographer and writer, whose work has been exhibited internationally. Of the images in her collection, “Altars and Icons - Sacred Spaces in Everyday Life”, she wrote ""A material thing — a stone, a photograph, an old shoe — can become a shrine when it is displayed in a way that evokes inspiration, memory, respect, or reverence." The book is a collection of personal essays on the process of creating these individual and disparate memorials to loved ones, accompanied by photographs and an essay by Jean McMann. 

 

This untitled print is one of four framed prints of altars from the collection. This framed print is 4.5” square, framed dimension 10.5”x 11”. This framed print is 4.5” square, framed dimension 10.5”x 11”. Prints can be purchased individually or as a group of 3 4.5" images. When purchased as a set, the price will be $200. Item Special Note

Jean McMann (1934-2015), a lifelong artist, author and academic, Jean studied the megalithic art and dwellings of Western Europe. This passion led her to write Riddles of the Stone Age (1980), which included exquisite photographs of the many prehistoric sites she visited. Her book, from which this image was taken, Altars and Icons: Sacred Spaces in Everyday Life, documents the personal shrines of artists, writers and friends (published 1998).
