Item Description
The first grade to 12th grade journey is full of many steps along the way. The student encounters many different people, on their path; from teachers, kids, other parents, to name a few. Each one of these encounters adds to the journey and to the definition of who the child blossoms into. Sometimes the journey is not smooth, and other times it feels easy breezy. At Summerfield, the relationship between the first graders and the 12th graders is an important partnership for both classes. For the young ones, it's a special bond of having that older kid to look up to and to look forward to hanging out with. For the Seniors, of course it's a joy to have that shadow of a wee person, who thinks of you as super human, but it is also a look back at their time at Summerfield and reflect of what they just accomplished.
We came up with the stepping stones theme, as representation of the journey. We had high hopes of greatness with these stones, only to discover that they had their own journey, and it wasn't the easiest path. But turned out to represent the effort it takes to get a child through the grades. As one of our leaders once said, it takes a village, and by golly, a village it did take to bring these stones into the world. In the end, the 24 stepping stones to add to a family's garden did not come to be. In the end the stones have become less about function and more about decoration, but never did they lose the camaraderie it took to create them.
