Item Description

Edwin Scheier, American, (Bronx, New York, 1910 – 2008, Green Valley, Arizona)

Bowl

Stoneware

10” x 11.25”

1996

This remarkable wheel-thrown bowl is enlivened by the sgraffito decoration and relief that are hallmarks of these pioneering 20th-century potters. Edwin was largely self-taught in ceramics and met his wife, Mary, also a ceramicist, while working for the WPA. They collaborated from the start of their marriage and created ceramics that melded their creative strengths. Edwin began teaching at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, where they both lived until 1968 when they moved to Oaxaca, Mexico to study Mayan arts and crafts. The couple won numerous awards throughout their careers, had their first retrospective at the Currier in 1948, and their last traveling retrospective, organized by the Currier, in 1991. The Scheiers’ ceramics are in many major museum collections, including the Currier.
