Item Description

Title & Artist: Marblehead Welcome Wagon by Brian K. Best

Medium & Size: Carved wood, found objects, enamel paint. 19" x 8"

Artist Statement: I am a self-taught artist who has always achieved great satisfaction from creating things with my hands. After high school, I trained as a machinist at a large factory complex in Lynn, Massachusetts. Both my grandfathers were also tradesmen - one a carpenter, the other a plumber. I thank them for their DNA and their influence on me growing up.
Assemblages, using mostly "found objects", are the works from which I derive the greatest satisfaction. Many of my works are purely whimsical in nature; others may provide social or political commentary, with a hint of irony or sarcasm. These pieces that begin in my mind and finish in my hands are a truly liberating for of self-expression that I will cherish forever.

Artist Biography: Brian K. Best was born and raised on the North Shore of Massachusetts. He was educated in public schools, after which he completed General Electric's Machinist Apprentice Program. He has since retired from the 9 to 5, and now is free to pursue his interests, including history, genealogy, fishing, and of course, his art.
Among the great influences in his life, he cites Bugs Bunny, the Three Stooges, the Marx Brothers and Hunter S. Thompson. Artistic influences include Alexander Calder, Joseph Cornell, Louise Nevelson, Banksy, and Al Hirschfeld.
Brian currently lives in Salem with his wife, fellow artist Mary Szeman Best.
