Item Description

Title & Artist: “The Blue Cod” - by Ellie Tomlinson

Medium & Size:  Acrylic on wood.  21 7/8" L x 8 5/8" H x 3/4" D.  For indoor display only.

Artist Statement:  I have lived in Marblehead for over 50 years and have been to every Festival, so I am happy to support the Festival by painting a cod. I have had work shown in the Painting exhibit many, many times. I love the Marblehead Festival of Arts and always consider it an honor to have my work displayed at Abbot Hall. Over the years, I have painted many different Marblehead scenes, and racing sailboats are a favorite subject. One Wednesday evening I was sitting on Gas House Beach watching a sailboat race passing the mouth of Little Harbor when a squall came in and created amazing dark and stormy colors with the white sails standing out. I have tried to recreate the feeling of that moment on this cod.

Artist Biography: Ellie Tomlinson lives and works in the seacoast town of Marblehead. She is an accomplished, professional artist who works with equal facility in oil, watercolor, pastel, and acrylic. She is an Artist Member of the Marblehead Arts Association.

Ellie is primarily a self-taught artist who has developed her own painting style from a combination of formal instruction, reading, and observing, but most of all from experimenting and working diligently with the various media. Her paintings depict a variety of subjects, including Nantucket sand dunes, skiers, flowers, sailboats, and napping cats. Many of her paintings portray favorite views and nautical scenes in Marblehead.

Ellie's paintings have been exhibited in museums, galleries, businesses, and private homes throughout New England. She has had more than two dozen one-artist shows, and over 600 of her paintings have been sold to individuals from Maine to California and in Europe. Ellie holds a B.A. degree from Colby College and, for more than three decades before retiring in 2004, was an art teacher at Tower School in Marblehead.
