Item Description

Meet Jim Toomey —  Creator of Sherman's Lagoon and Ocean Activist — in Annapolis, Maryland / Washington, DC area for lunch or dinner

There is a lagoon called Kapupu near the island of Kapupu in the sunny North Pacific just west of the Elabaob Islands in the Palauan archipelago of Micronesia. Sherman the Shark, his wife, Megan, and a host of other lagoon occupants call it home. Occasionally the hairless beach apes with their so-called civilized human ways try to encroach on the Lagoonies tropical paradise.

For the past 18 years, Jim Toomey has been writing and drawing the daily comic strip Sherman’s Lagoon, which is syndicated in more than 250 newspapers in North America including the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Toronto Star. It also appears in more than 30 foreign countries, in French, Portuguese, Spanish, Norwegian and Swedish. Jim has just completed his 18th book.

Sherman’s Lagoon combines two of his life-long passions: art and the sea. In addition to drawing his comic strip, Jim is active in marine conservation. Jim (and Sherman) enlighten and entertain, and promote shark conservation: Kapupu Lagoon and the entire ocean ecosystem depend on a healthy shark population!

The conservation messages in his comic strip earned him the Environmental Hero Award presented by NOAA on behalf of former Vice President Al Gore “for using art and humor to conserve and protect our marine heritage”. He has also contributed his comic characters and other illustrations to educational materials published by NOAA for the purpose of raising environmental awareness.

Item Special Note

The objective of this auction is to spotlight individuals and organizations working effectively for ocean conservation, and raise funds for field research, conservation and outreach projects.

Being auctioned is a dinner or lunch with one of the world's foremost shark experts or celebrities. This is a unique opportunity to "talk shark" face-to-face, one-on-one, with a real authority on sharks.

How this auction works

1. Bid on a celebrity you would like to get to know personally (shark scientist, educator, explorer filmmaker, shark photographer, television host, conservationist) who works or lives nearby, unless you are willing to drive or fly to meet them in their area.

2. We will introduce the winning bidder to the celebrity. The two of you then set a mutually agreeable date, time and place to meet within one year of the close of the auction.

3. The winning bidder pays for lunch or dinner and may bring guests.

NOTE: The winning bid is 100% deductible from US Federal 2018 income taxes as a Charitable Donation. A tax receipt will be given to the winning bidder.
