Item Description

The winner of this package will receive this first-edition copy of Lives of the Necromancers, or An Account of the Most Eminent Persons in Successive Ages Who Have Claimed for Themselves or to Whom has Been Imputed by Others the Exercise of Magical Powers (1834), from Las Vegas Oddities.

This was the final book written by English journalist, political philosopher and novelist William Godwin. The book concerns paranormal legends from western and middle eastern history. In 1835 it was reviewed by Edgar Allan Poe of the Southern Literary Messenger.[1]

William Godwin (3 March 1756 – 7 April 1836) was an English journalist, political philosopher and novelist. He is considered one of the first exponents of utilitarianism and the first modern proponent of anarchism.

In the conservative reaction to British radicalism, Godwin was attacked, in part because of his marriage to the pioneering feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft in 1797 and his candid biography of her after her death from childbirth.

Wollstonecraft is best known for A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), in which she argues that women are not naturally inferior to men, but appear to be only because they lack education. She suggests that both men and women should be treated as rational beings and imagines a social order founded on reason.

Their daughter, later known as Mary Shelley, would go on to write Frankenstein and marry the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

The book has some underlining and highlights, not unusual for a nearly 200 year old book. It is in a brown leather binding that is matching with the time, and the value was given to us by the antiquarian book expert at Heritage Auctions, Scott Schilb.

Las Vegas Oddities located on Main Street south of Charleston and next to Velveteen Rabbit, is the Weirdest Little Shop In Vegas. Come in for curiosities and artifacts to sate the creepy cousin in all of us, and stay for a palm reading.
