Item Description
The steel covers are textured using a flame etched process in the blacksmithing gas furnace and then cold riveted to the leather spine. The edges of the covers are finely textured using a hand hammering process. The page sections, or signatures, are cut and folded to size and then stitched to the leather spine.
Materials: mild steel plate, round head rivets, leather, acid free white paper, Nepalese Lotka fiber paper, synthetic sinew

Carla grew up in the land of the Pines in central North Carolina, where she learned to use tools at an early age. She developed a foundation of blacksmithing at Penland School of Crafts and while apprenticing with various blacksmiths throughout the US. She established her small arts studio Carla Hall Metal Design and has run youth programs at The Crucible, in Oakland, CA for the past almost 20 years. Carla is happy to now call Minneapolis home and continues her work of education and collaboration in her North Minneapolis based studio.
