Item Description
Respiratory Gas Exchange & Blood Lactate Performance Testing
a $285 value
Respiratory gas exchange exercise testing protocols, done with the right equipment, provide in-depth analysis of the body’s response to exercise for a full metabolic profile, such as:
• Accurate identification of key metabolic thresholds to establish training zones
• Caloric expenditure at varying levels of intensity
• Fuel utilization (contributions of fat and carbohydrate) during exercise
• Measurement of cardiorespiratory fitness & VO2 max
• Maximal aerobic power
A fitness assessment measures the following variables:
1. Body profile measurement (%body fat)
2. VO2 max
3. Power at VO2 max
4. Cycling economy at submaximal effort
5. Training Thresholds
6. Substrate Utilization (fat & carbohydrate)
Furthermore, the results allow us to make recommendations to optimize your training.
Your cycling or running fitness assessment will consist of the following:
The assessment starts with an evaluation of your body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). This measurement will set a baseline so we can identify trends in your body composition in terms of percent body fat. After a short warm up on the cycle ergometer or treadmill,
we will begin a submaximal test to look at your economy and substrate utilization (fat & carbohydrate). Your economy is measured as the amount of oxygen you consume during an easy to moderate effort. This test will take 10-15 minutes.
After a short break you will begin the VO2max/threshold test. Blood lactate testing does not include a sub-maximal test. The protocols for VO2max/threshold tests are done in a ramp format. You will start
at a set wattage or pace and every 3-5minutes the wattage (pace or resistance) will increase to volitional fatigue. Typically, a VO2max/threshold test lasts 15-21 minutes. Blood lactate protocols consist of 5 efforts ranging from very low up to maximal effort with recovery segments between each exercise bout. In a blood lactate test, a very small amount of blood is drawn from the ear lobe and
sampled with a lactate analyzer at specific time increments. Blood lactate tests last between 35-45 minutes. Endurance is partnered with INSCYD performance analysis software, where a combined lactate & VO2 protocol can be employed. For testing in the field protocols may vary and are done with lactate sampling only.
