Item Description
I’ve loved butterflies for a very long time. They have always been a symbol to me of the beauty and transformation that can emerge from unlikely places. How sometimes in unknown circumstances the end result can be something that couldn’t have previously been fathomed. Around the world the butterfly is often seen as representing endurance, change, hope, and life. Through cancer one needs endurance, change, and hope. Cancer has been by far the most transforming experience of my life. I have simply emerged a different being. Metamorphosis creates a loss of one form, but an emergence of another (many would argue more beautiful than the previous). I wanted my chair, as well as my life, to reflect the energy and warmth of a great vivacious life regardless of obstacles I have faced. I truly feel that over the course of this summer I have come through this transformation and am standing on the other side, bright, bold, and happy.
Item Special Note
About the Artist
Sherie Drees is the mother of twin boys and was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 35. As an Artist and Art teacher she was drawn to the WBCC through the Rare Chair Affair fundraiser to participate as an artist in 2015. Sherie shared "While undergoing treatment the organization and the people I met throughout the summer gave me hope moving forward through my chemotherapy, surgeries, and radiation." I give thanks for each day, each breath, by continuing to help other people that may someday face a breast cancer diagnosis. Spending the past two years on the board of directors for the WBCC has certainly given purpose to my story and I continue to live my life fully knowing that each day is a blessing to be cherished. It is in our ordinary moments that life is truly lived."
