Item Description
Frances Anderton, host of KCRW's "DNA: Design and Architecture" will give a tour of the Santa Monica public radio station. You can choose between a visit to KCRW's famed "basement" on the campus of Santa Monica College at Pearl and 20th Streets, or the new building located at Stewart and Olympic. Either tour will be approximately 30 minutes. Or, give twice as much to the choir* and Frances will show you both buildings (though plan more time for travel between the two).
At the basement you can tour the working studios, see shows in production, maybe run into KCRW daily hosts (availability depends on time of day of the visit) and get a last glimpse of the station's longtime home before it moves to its new building.
The new building, designed by architect Clive Wilkinson, is an open, light and bright multi-tiered space looking onto a plaza that already serves as a venue for KCRW concerts. Hosts currently do most of their work in the old building but in the new building you'll meet some of its behind-the-scenes staffers and get to see the station's future.
Item Special Note
The tour will be scheduled at the mutual convenience of Frances Anderton and the auction winner.
*The "give twice as much" option will work like this: The auction item will go to the highest bidder. Once the winner is determined, that person can opt to double his or her gift by letting Frances know at the time that they schedule the tour. The bidder will then give his or her additional gift (in cash or check made payable to SMAPA-Vocal Music) to Frances, who will pass it along to the Samohi Choir Program.
