Item Description
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September of 2016. I could not have comprehended just how much cancer would change my life, but I knew it would! I also knew that, once I finished treatment, I wanted to become more involved and I reached out to the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Coalition where I learned about the Rare Chair Affair! As a survivor artist, I wanted to include, in my chair, certain experiences that affected me greatly, during my cancer journey. At the center of the chair are two symbols that represent an online group of survivors that has become a main source of knowledge and support for me! The group's logo includes an alpaca and a butterfly. The alpaca fur on the seat of the chair came from a fellow group member who has an alpaca farm in Texas! The female figure with the star on her heart represents a retreat I attended where I met other survivors and we focused on the emotional aspects of this disease. Last, but not least, I wanted to be sure to include the phoenix bird, which for me, was a symbol of a physical re-birth. I became a triathlete this year with a team of female cancer survivors, and it was extremely empowering! Life after breast cancer can be tough at times, but I am learning to embrace the "unexpected gifts" cancer has been giving me! I am thankful for the opportunity to create this chair and I hope that it will somehow serve as a way to impact other cancer survivors positively!
