"In the Night Room" by Suzanne Kiggins
Gouache and ink on paper. Framed. Original Painting. 24" X 18"
Suzanne Kiggins is a contemporary folk artist based in Brooklyn, NY. She started to develop her current work in 2017. This work is inspired by the exploration of the unconscious mind and the influence of the unconscious mind on our actions and feelings.
Visually these pieces could be compared to traditional folk art with detailed ornamental patterns like florals, gems and stars and also figures of animals, humans or mythological creatures. Traditional folk art often represented stories that people created in order to understand and celebrate the world at large and their spiritual and emotional connection to the universe. Such stories had a strong influence on humankind’s collective understanding of the world. Suzanne’s work is seeking to find that same collective unconscious (a term coined by Carl Jung) in a contemporary world where the communal fabric of our society is eroding, with individuals spending more time cut off from each other.
Scenes of animals camping by the fire, figures floating down the river or emerging from a volcano crater portray a mood of serene stillness, calm and comfort but also a sense of longing. In a world where connection to the natural world is often interrupted, and where days are spent in front of screens, in fluorescent office buildings and malls, our unconscious is a direct conduit back to the natural world and mysteries of existence, and a reminder that this connection to the natural world is very much alive in all of us.
