Thanks to over five decades of enthusiastic community support, The Gardens is one of Birmingham’s most treasured and popular destinations. Its 67.5 acres feature more than two dozen gardens, inspired by culture, nature and collections, ranging from the Japanese Garden and Fern Glade to the historic Conservatory and Formal Gardens. Its diverse plant collections celebrate the wonder of the plant world, illustrate Alabama’s extraordinary biodiversity, offer inspiration for home gardeners, and provide seasonal interest with ever-changing displays.
Located in north central Alabama, Birmingham is flanked by picturesque mountain ridges that represent the southernmost tip of the Appalachians. Nicknamed “the Magic City” for its rapid growth in the early 20th century, downtown Birmingham is experiencing an exciting renaissance and is also home to Railroad Park, winner of the 2014 AHS Urban Beautification Award. Described as historically significant, eclectically funky, and progressively southern, the Birmingham area offers a delightful getaway for everyone from foodies to outdoor enthusiasts.
Tom Underwood became executive director of the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens in 2017. Prior to joining the Friends, he served as executive director with the American Horticultural Society. He began his career in horticulture at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Tom holds an undergraduate degree in Ornamental Horticulture from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and a graduate degree in Science Education from the University of Central Florida.
