Image and story developed in a Family Stories through Art workshop, www.familystoriesthroughart.com

"The river tariffs are too high so we travel through France on a freight wagon that, on its trip inland, had brought bales of cotton from America. Papa bought our ship passage from an agent who met us on the road, but now we wait and wait in Le Havre. We have brought our own cheese and cured meat for the six week sea voyage ahead of us. The crossing could take even longer if the weather is bad. We keep watch on our trunk and bundles. Mama’s precious clock engraved with her and Papa’s wedding day, April 6, 1807, is wrapped deep in a feather bed. She would not be parted with it. Mama and Papa are not young. Mama is 55 years and Papa is 48 years. I worry for their health on this long journey."
