Item Description
Are you tired of struggling with food, disliking your body and diets that do not work followed by disappointment and self-criticism? Is it time for you to try something different? Or, have you tried mindfulness and now want to focus mindfulness on your relationship with food and your body?
The course, Mindful Eating, is based upon the work of Jan Chozen Bays, MD and Char Wilkins, LCSW, and adapted to serve as a course by Nirakara, Mindfulness Institute. In her book, Mindful Eating, Jan Chozen Bays writes, “This book is not about diets or rules. It is about exploring what we already have and appreciating everything we are doing. Will you lose or gain weight if you bring mindfulness into cooking and eating? I don’t know. What you could lose is the weight of the mind’s unhappiness with eating and dissatisfaction with food. What you could gain are a simple joy with food and an easy pleasure in eating that are your birthrights as a human being.”
Mindful eating involves purposefully and non-judgmentally paying attention to what is happening right now within your body, mind and heart, as well as, what is happening outside in the environment. In this course you will be introduced to mindfulness with a focus on mindful eating. We will explore “the nine hungers” including, eye, nose, touch, ear, mouth, stomach, body, mind and heart hunger that commonly drive our eating. Additionally, we will mindfully investigate level of hunger, craving, fullness, satisfaction, eating patterns, body sensations and gratitude for the body.
Through classroom exercises, mindfulness practices, home practices, and lectures during the course and ongoing mindfulness practice, you can gain insight and awareness into your eating. This awareness can lead to fewer automatic responses and more conscious choices related to your thoughts, feelings and behaviors associated with eating and your body satisfaction. As a result, you can learn once again to feed yourself well and eat with pleasure. When mindful eating is a regular part of your life, eating and food can be transformed from a source of distress to a source of self-understanding, satisfaction, and even joy!
