Item Description
A selection of wines from John Carnahan, Class of '75, with his descriptions:
1. Baja de Troia, 2017, is a Portuguese wine new to me, but I have found a number of Portuguese wines to be very good in recent months.
2. Caravacas de Primicia, 2016, a Spanish Rioja, is another wine new to me that I just received as part of a case I purchased from Wall Street Journal Wines. While I usually avoid club wines, I have not received a bad wine yet from this source.
3. Sauvignon Blanc by Thierry Delauray, 2017, is an excellent example of light, slightly fruity white wine with a touch of mineral that makes it delightful.
4. Xavier VacQueyras, 2007, is one of several bottles I bought around 2008. Notes said to drink immediately or put away for ten or more years. I took the advice and drank a couple of bottles with friends who loved it. Then, I put a couple of bottles away to see what it would be like with more maturity. I hope you enjoy it.
5. Ottimino Zinfandel, 2013, is one of my personal favorites. I have had 2007, 2012, 2013 and 2015 from this winery, all wonderful wines.
6. Robert Storey Cellars, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2008. Robert Storey doesn’t own a vineyard, but instead, buys grapes from, in his opinion, the best of those harvested in California. I have various years of this wine, from 2002 to 2015, and have always found them very enjoyable.
7. Chateau Gaillot Fournier, Bordeaux, 2015. I read an article recently by Eric Asimov in the New York Times where he recommended buying Bordeaux at all price ranges, that the wines are so good it is hard to go wrong. I am including a couple here with that in mind.
8. Chateau de Macard, Bordeaux Superieur, 2015. I just received this via Fed Ex and haven’t had a chance to try it, but I’m betting it will be delicious.
9. Domaine St-Michel, Cotes du Rhone, 2016. Another new wine, but it comes highly recommended. I am looking forward to trying it myself. This is another Wall Street Journal wine selection.
10. Collezione di Paolo, Chianti Riserva, 2014. What is a case of mostly red wines without a bottle of good Chianti?
11. H.J. Fabre, Malbec Reserva, 2015. I opened a bottle of this wine two days ago and, though I sometimes find malbecs a little dark and brooding, this one was a very tasty wine we paired with strong goat cheese and lamb shanks.
12. Forbes Creek Vintage Selection, Pinot Noir, 2016. I nearly finished off the case without including a Pinot Noir. It has become a favorite wine of mine and I hope you enjoy it as well.
