Item Description

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy's Art Show and Sale's 2019 Featured Artist, Karen Sutton, has painted this beautiful duo, "Lake Sunset" and "OBX Lineup" just for you!

These paintings depict tranquil sunet scenes over the water. Both paintings are framed in traditional black frames with gold accents outlining the painting.

Karen E. Sutton is a representational painter whose subject matter includes still life, florals and landscapes. She cites painting on location in the plein air tradition and working directly from life "alla prima" in her studio as the most powerful aids in her growth as a painter. Use of the chiaroscuro method in still life allows her to impart a deep emotional quality to her canvases. Primarily a still life painter, she also enjoys the challenge of outdoor painting as it leads to more stimulating color, value and brushwork from the momentum created under plein air time constraints. More recently, her landscapes reflect the influence of the tonalist/luminist movement.

With her mother's encouragement, Karen began drawing at an early age and pursued this interest throughout her childhood, taking every available art class in high school. She has attended workshops and built an extensive personal library on art and fine artists' techniques. She credits the teachings and work of Richard Schmid, a Vermont-based artist, as her greatest source of practical painting instruction and influence. Over the years, Karen has received numerous awards, including Best in Show at the Stockley Gardens Art Festival, an Award of Excellence at the Port Warwick Art & Sculpture Festival and a People’s Choice Award at the Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center.

Karen’s philosophy as an artist can be summed up by her favorite quote, "The job of the artist is to show the world the beauty in the mundane," by Charles W. Hawthorne, who established the Cape Cod School of Art in the late 1800s.

Be sure to join us at the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Art Show & Sale, January 26 - February 3, 2019 to view and purchase more artwork by Karen and over 200 artists.
