Item Description

Packet of CD’s Joanna Ross Hersey ’89 – valued at $50.00

CD #1 - O quam mirabilis, Joanna Ross Hersey: The composers whose work I have arranged and performed on this recording represent the rich, vibrant history of women in the field of music composition.  From the mystic and otherworldly echos of Hildegard von Bingen’s Medieval church music, to the modern concertos being composed today, music by women deserves more of a place in low brass repertoire.  When programming, we all too often think of Galliard but not Francesca Caccini, of Brahms but not Clara Schumann, of Shostakovich but not Alma Mahler.  The spirit and energy of these pieces will speak for themselves, they do not need me to speak for them, only to give them a voice.

CD #2 - Zigs-Zags, Joanna Ross Hersey: This recording features a mix of classical tuba solo repertoire, such as the title track, composed by Faye-Ellen Silverman, and also tuba in an electronic setting. The album introduces my debut solo composition entitled Convent Window, an unaccompanied work for solo tuba. In addition, the album showcases four newly composed pieces which are tuba in an electronic setting, composed by myself and electronic artist Bill Bendrot.

CD #3 - Prelude and Groove, The Alchemy Tuba Euphonium Quartet: As America’s longest running professional tuba euphonium quartet, Alchemy was formed in 1976 as the Atlantic Tuba Quartet, and forty years later the group continues to bring their unique arrangements and classic approach to a new generation of audiences.  The group was founded by, and has always included, members of the United States Coast Guard Band, one of our nation’s five premiere service bands, stationed in New London, Connecticut. Current members Danny Vinson (Instructor of Euphonium, University of Houston), James Jackson (Principal Euphonium, U.S. Coast Guard Band), Gary Buttery (Principal Tuba, U.S. Coast Guard Band, retired) and Joanna Ross Hersey (Professor of Tuba and Euphonium, UNC Pembroke), celebrate twenty years of playing in the group together this year as well, the same four have made up the Alchemy membership together since 1996. Inventive programming and a steady supply of new works from founding member and composer Gary Buttery, along with other composers, infect their performances with life and brilliancy, what one reviewer described as “a musical fabric of pure gold.”

CD #4 - JAM - Joanna and Michael: A new duo group featuring Michael and myself on euphonium, tuba and cimbasso, showcasing new arrangements and commissions. The album includes solos, duos, and the debut of a new tuba euphonium quartet, LA JAM, with Lance LaDuke and Andrew Hitz.
