Item Description

Michael Moore

Michael Moore grew up in Stoughton, MA in a large Irish-American family. Like many young men of his time, he served in the Vietnam War in the late 60’s. After the war, Moore became a commercial fisherman, fishing out of New Bedford. Between fishing trips, he lived on a farm in Stowe, Vermont.

In the summer, the farm became a rural retreat and classroom for an artist by the name of Frank Mason and his students from the Art Student’s League of New York City. Moore became inspired by their work and decided to end his work as a fisherman and move to New York to enroll in the art school.

He worked his way through eight years of study with Mason and others at the Art Student's League, immersing himself in the techniques of the Dutch and Italian Masters. He then moved to Nantucket for ten years, refining his craft and gaining national recognition.

Michael Moore married Caroline Moore on Nantucket, and they had two sons, Thomas and Will. In 2000, they moved to Strafford, VT, where they lived for fourteen years. They now reside in Dedham, MA.

Moore paints and displays his work at his studio in the Motherbook Arts and Community Center, in Dedham MA. Seasonally, he displays his work at the Susan Lister Locke Gallery, and Nantucket Looms, both on Nantucket.
