Children’s Museum of Virginia

Children step inside a world where bubbles grow bigger than they are, where the forces of energy electrify and spark their imagination, where they can be a farmer, a banker, a firefighter, and more! The Museum includes a huge antique toy and train collection, awe inspiring train display, and modernized Planetarium. “It’s the only museum where you can come and touch things. Here we say go up, touch it, play with it, push it, figure out what makes it work.”

The Children's Museum of Virginia is located at 221 High Street in Portsmouth. www.childrensmuseumva.com

Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center

This Greek-Revival building built in 1846, served as the Norfolk County Courthouse until 1960. It is now home to the Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center, with two spacious galleries of ever-changing exhibits. The museum is also host to a variety of workshops. And the courtyard is usually a buzz with artist demonstrations and live music on First Friday’s from May through October.

The Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center is located on the corner of High and Court in Portsmouth.  www.portsmouthartcenter.com

Portsmouth Community Colored Library Museum

The Portsmouth Colored Community Library served black patrons from 1945 until 1963, when the main library was integrated. The small, one-story brick building was originally located on South Street near Effingham Street. The land at this new location was purchased with donations made by Portsmouth citizens, black and white.

The Portsmouth Colored Community Library is located at 904 Elm Avenue in Portsmouth. www.portsvaafricanamericanheritage.com

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum

If you’re interested in local or naval history, or memorabilia from a centuries-old Southern port, you’ll find the Naval Shipyard Museum a delight. Established in 1949 within the nation’s oldest shipyard, the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Museum was later moved to the Portsmouth waterfront at High Street Landing on the Elizabeth River.

The Portsmouth Navel Shipyard Museum is located at 2 High Street in Portsmouth.  www.portsmouthnavalshipyardmuseum.com

Lightship Portsmouth Museum

Built in 1915 and began service as part of the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1916. In 1964, the lightship was retired to Portsmouth, VA. In 1989, the Lightship Portsmouth was designated a National Historic Landmark. Now a museum, the ship’s quarters are fitted out realistically and filled with fascinating artifacts, uniforms, photographs, models, and more.
