Item Description
A copy of the book THEO, autographed by the author Theodore Bikel. Donated by Between the Lines with Barry Kibrick on PBS. This is a wonderful autobiography of an amazing man. Theodore Bikel, folk singer, actor, and citizen of the world, was an activist for justice in nearly every sphere. President of Actor's Equity, he worked for the international rights of actors and artists of all stripes. Theo marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. for black equality, and made trips to Russia to help free the Russian Jews who were held prisoners there. There was no cause he did not promote if it helped ordinary people gain their freedom and human rights. Amazingly talented, he was a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, appeared in "A Streetcar Named Desire" with Vivien Leigh on the stage, and made the role of Tevye his own in 1,000 appearances in "Fiddler on the Roof." I saw him on Broadway as the original Captain von Trapp in "The Sound of Music," and lamented that he was not cast in the film in that role. In addition, he sang folk songs in 21 languages, and was a citizen of four countries: Austria (born in Vienna), Israel, Britain, and the United States.
