Item Description
"Hey Fellows" by John Emmet Sheridan, original WWI propaganda poster. Unframed, 20" x 29."
Very Good Condition
Iconic 1918 American Library Association, United War Work Campaign poster promoting reading and books for the military. The poster is designed by noted magazine illustrator John Emmet Sheridan (1877–1948).
Poster shows a soldier holding up a book and calling out, "Hey fellows!", with a sailor sitting on the ground at his feet, reading. The soldier seems to be issuing a general call to both his fellow servicemen to come get books, as well as to his fellow countrymen to contribute funds to make books available for the men in the armed forces. The fundraising color lithograph was commissioned by the Committee on Public Information, Division of Pictorial Publicity of the American Library Association. Ironically, the poster is dated “Week of November 11, 1918”; that very day, the hostilities of the First World War ceased when an Armistice was declared.
