Item Description
The bag is made by the Wayuu people who live between Colombia and Venezuela in South America. The Wayuu people are incredible artisans and their handcrafts are an important part of their livelihood. The society is matrilineal: the land passes to the women's families and many of them advise in matters of law and disputes.
When a girl reaches puberty, she is isolated in a special hut, given a special diet, and she is only allowed to see her mother and grandmother, who are in charge of teaching her all the needs to be a woman. Amothi knowledge is knitting and weaving. The Wayuu people believe a spider-like deity appeared in dreams to a Wayuu woman and taught her how to knit. Knitting and weaving are truly part of their lives and they can even knit while they walk!
The colors they use have meaning: brown is the land (it's very arid there), green is vegetation, yellow is the sun, blue the sky, and pink and orange are flowers. The symbols represent either nature (star, birds) or are of their tribe.
The bags are made of cotton and acrylic and hence can be washed in cold water in the washing machin. They need to be dried in the open air as the dryer might shink it.
