Item Description
2.05 ct. Burmese royal color change (purple/violet/blue) natural cushion cut Spinel (VS2; 7.5mm x 6.48mm x 4.68mm) accented by 36 round cut diamonds (F-color/VS2 clarity, 0.42 ct. total weight), set in 8kt White Gold ring. 4.75 grams.
Along with a rich range of hues, Spinel offers color-change varieties. Color change spinel appears violet blue under fluorescent light and purple under incandescent light. Spinel is one of few gemstones that require no special treatments; its beautiful, vivid colors and clarity are entirely natural. Spinel is also excellent for use in jewelry because it is hard, tough and often more affordable than Ruby or Sapphire.
Increasing demand has rekindled appreciation for Spinel’s rich color and history. In ancient times, southeast Asia’s mines yielded exceptional large Spinel crystals, which became the treasured property of kings and emperors, often passing through many hands as spoils of war. Spinel was recently added as an August birthstone, sharing this month with Peridot and Sardonyx. It has long been mistaken for Ruby by emperors and monarchs. Many of the famous “Rubies” of history were actually Spinels.
