Item Description
Heather Jones is a self-taught quilter, author, and designer who lives outside of Cincinnati, Ohio with her husband and two young children. Her quilts have been honored with awards and have been featured in museums around the U.S. Heather began her career as a painter and this new new body of work combines her life-long love of quilting with how she wants to paint. Using fabric as paint, Heather creates improvisationally pieced quilt blocks, stretched around hand-made wooden frames. She works intuitively without a set pattern, and finds her inspiration in the everyday; the painted lines that make up the yield sign in the parking lot of a local big box store, a hen house at a nearby farm, and even the bathroom of a fast-food restaurant. Her unique creations open up a dialogue between fine art and craft. The pieced fabrics honor the hand of the maker, while the minimal clean lines, composition, and subtle color juxtaposition reveal a deep knowledge of geometric abstraction and color theory. For Heather the work is about “staying present in the moment, even in a very busy life, in order to see the beauty in the everyday that is all around us.” Heather Jones has a master’s degree in art history from the University of Cincinnati. Her first solo book, Quilt Local: Finding Inspiration in the Everyday was released in October 2015. She is the founder and former president of the Cincinnati Modern Quilt Guild. She teaches online at Creativebug.com, on television at Quilting Arts TV, and in person throughout the country. Heather’s first one-person museum exhibition opened in the Fall of 2017 at the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati.
