Item Description

Check out a one-of-a-kind antique butcher block donated by David Ames from the Governor Oliver Ames Estate.  The butcher block was made in Boston, Massachusetts by the William G. Bell & Company and includes a letter of authenticity from David Ames who donated it.  The letter states:

“The old butcher block was in the stone stable of the Governor’s Estate when [his] mother and father moved there in 1951.  It is about measuring 33” high, 19" deep, and 21” wide.  It is heavy, 75 to 100 pounds would be a guess.  In 1951 we found it in the stable's carriage room which is on the right as you walk in.  Historically, [he] thinks it was used in the kitchen of the Governor’s house and, when that was taken down in 1938, it was moved to the stable.  In addition to the butcher block there was a sleigh, a carriage, and a lot of other interesting old horse tack in the carriage room.  While the sleigh and the carriage were burn't in the haybarn fire at 250 Main St. a few years ago, the butcher block remained in the carriage room until 2012 when we cleared the room out for the Trustees and moved it over to the Langwater carpentry shop at 250 Main St. where it is now.

"We are pleased to donate it to the Lions Club Auction which funds so much good work in Easton.

"Sincerely, Dick”

The Butcher Block is on display at the North Easton Savings Bank 295 Main Street branch until March 1st.  For additional information about the Butcher Block, contact Lion Lee Williams at 508-345-6544.
