A Sustainable Table- The journey into our food future!
Between all our driving, cooking and the scraps with thrown away, no matter how sustainable we would like our dinner tables to be, the fact of the matter is that they are not. In fact, 25% more trash is generated in November and December than any other time of the year! When it comes to the kitchen table, there are a number of easy things that we can do to cook more sustainably. Looking for local, organic sustainable ingredients is really only the tip of the iceberg. Looking at local resources such as water can contribute significantly to whether or not a meal is sustainable or not. Most of us never think about the fact that it takes nearly 1,000 gallons of water to produce an 8 oz steak. But what are the answers? How can we make small changes that will create the biggest impact.
This exercise will take the participants through a single plate working together to guess the foods on the plate that take the most resources to produce. Once they have determined what that is, they will decide how the plate can be better balanced to reduce the resource depletion, the wasted foods lost and still create a meal that is both nutritious and physically satisfying.
