The Benchmark of Quality -- Herb Lamb Vineyards

-- One 3L 2014 HL Herb Lamb Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

Just a mere 7 and a half acres of rocky hillside ranging from 600 to 800 feet in elevation, on the eastern hillside of St. Helena just below Howell Mountain, produce the extremely limited HL Herb Lamb Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon.

The grapes for the ultra-premium HL Cabernet Sauvignon come from only certain sections and rows and by virtue of the small tonnage from this hillside vineyard, only 200-400 cases are produced each year. Even more limited are the large formats produced, which are only released for local charitable causes. The Herb Lamb wines are true ambassadors of the soil, climate and location, the grapes from this site delivering benchmark quality wines year after year.  In Jennifer’s words, she is thrilled to share her passion and product of the land with us in this lovely donation.

The 2014 HL shows sweet, ripe fruit flavors.  The nose starts with pure seamless pure fruit and sweet tobacco leaf highlighted by dark berry and black cherry with cocoa hints and ripe blue and red fruit.  On entry, the wine is velvety and feminine, with fine tannins well-integrated reflecting the 80% new French oak used for aging.

The 2013-2014 winter was one of the driest on record in California, with rainfall totals only half of normal in the Napa Valley. But in early March, rains provided a much-needed drink of water to the vines emerging from dormancy, and it was a warm, no-frost spring.  Berries were smaller and more concentrated and delivered one of the most abundant crops in recent years.

The critics and reviewers have fallen HARD for this wine, bestowing accolades and high point ratings.
Quite simply, this is as good as it gets in the Napa Valley.
