Item Description
Our 6th grade students spent the fall semester working on the World Weaver project learning about culture, art and rug design. These notecards showcase just a few of the students designs from all 6th grade classrooms.
During the two-month residency students scanned and analyzed rugs, and discussed the cultures where the rugs came from. They also discussed the elements of art (line, shape, color, space, and value), the principles of design of unity, and the uses of symbols in art. This year carpets designs had to incorporate symbols into their designs.
The sixth graders examined rugs from across the world to learn artistic, cultural and narrative elements. Additionally, the rugs gave the students insight into history, geography, color, design, math, agriculture and manufacturing.
In addition, the Minasian brothers selected two of the rugs to be crafted in Afghanistan through Arzu Studio Hope, a not-for-profit organization that supports women in rural villages of Afghanistan by providing social benefits and fair wages for the production of high quality rugs. That gave some of the kids something tangible from all of their studies.
Carney Minasian said he enjoys working with the kids because they’re not inhibited by traditional color and design rules, so the resulting rugs are often fresh and spontaneous.
