Item Description

Handmade just for the Thoreau Society 2019 auction, the birdhouse is a mini-replica of the Harper’s Ferry Arsenal where John Brown carried out his fateful raid in October of 1859. Featured throughout are excerpts from Thoreau’s October 30th, 1859 “A Plea for Captain John Brown”. The top cupola bears the words of the civil-war-era marching song “John Brown’s Song” (aka, “John Brown’s Body”), and the bird-entry side has images and names of “The Secret Six” suspected of aiding Brown.

The birdhouse may be used as indoor decoration or outdoors as a real birdhouse . Exterior sealed, it is weather resistive.

The side door is hinged and opens for easy cleaning of the birdhouse (or allows it to be used as a storage box).

(Not shown in photos), the birdhouse has dual method predator protection with an interior stop block and exterior turn lock.

Interiorly, the birdhouse has emergency footholds if birds need them to get out.

The birdhouse will come with a complete printed copy of Thoreau’s Plea For Captain Brown tied in a scroll and placed inside the birdhouse.
