Item Description

Beautiful Tuareg Talisman Box Pendant: The traditionally-nomadic Tuareg people are indigenous to the Sahara desert. They are often called "the Blue People of the desert" due to the indigo dye they use on their garments that stains their skin. Tuareg talisman boxes or "tcherots" were worn by women and on men's turbans. They typically contain verses of the Quran and were worn as protective amulets for fertility and strength. This artisan-crafted ethnic necklace features multi-twisted strands of tiny glass beads, mixed with round black and deep red beads and tubular brass/silver beads. The beads set off the unique silver and brass talisman box with hand-etched with designs. Strung on the original cord, this necklace is 20.5" long with a traditional hooked clasp. This beautiful piece was acquired by C.A.S.E. therapist, Madeleine Krebs, when she served in Niger as a Peace Corps Volunteer from 1992 - 1994. Be sure to view these other hand-crafted Tuareg items: #209, #229 and #231.
